Mentoring for Postdocs - The Event
On June 2, 2025, the University of Vienna hosted a full-day event dedicated to strengthening a mentoring culture for postdoctoral researchers — from both the mentee and mentor perspectives. The morning session, Mentoring for Postdocs – The Mentees Edition, brought together postdocs from across disciplines to explore how they can actively shape and benefit from mentoring relationships. Through practical inputs, peer discussions, and programme showcases, participants gained valuable insights into how to identify mentors, set expectations, and engage meaningfully in the mentoring process.
In the afternoon, Mentoring for Postdocs – The Mentors Edition experienced academics, institutional leaders, and mentors from various faculties gathered to explore how Mentors at the University of Vienna can be empowered. With a keynote talk and a panel discussion, the event highlighted the many ways mentoring is already being practised — often informally — and invited reflection on how these efforts can be made more visible, supported, and impactful. Discussions emphasised the need for a mentoring culture that empowers both sides and promotes diverse career trajectories within and beyond academia.
The event encouraged discussion, shared learning, and mutual inspiration — confirming the central but not exclusive role of mentoring in supporting the postdoctoral community at the University of Vienna in enhancing their careers.
